Locate an Item Using Your AirTag
For an item you misplace nearby, like in your home, you can use the Precise Location feature for the AirTag (Settings> Privacy > Location Services > Find My). This shows exactly where the item is, how far from you it’s located, and you can have it play a sound. For an item away from home, you can see its last known location, its current spot on a map, and get directions to it. Open the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad (or your Mac) and select the Items tab. You’ll see your item on a map along with its location and a timestamp below its name. If your AirTag cannot be found, you’ll see its last known location. Optionally, you can select the item and enable Notifications > Notify When Found to receive an alert when the item is located.

If the item is not near you, you can use the Maps app to find it—tap Directions to open Maps and navigate to the item.If the item is near you, tap Find. You’ll receive instructions showing how far the item is from your spot. As you move, you’ll also see directions like “To your left,” “To your right,” or “Behind you.” As you get closer to the item, you can also tap the speaker icon to play a sound.
When you locate your item, tap the X to finish and close the locator.
Locate an Item by Playing a Sound
If you know your item is close by and want the AirTag to play a sound, you can do this without using the above instructions to navigate to it. On the Items tab of the Find My app, select your item and tap Play Sound. The sound will stop automatically when your device is near the AirTag. You can also tap Stop Sound if you spot the AirTag before the sound ends.
This is helpful if you know you’re near the item but can’t see it because it’s under the bed, between the sofa cushions, or in the pocket of your pants in the laundry hamper.
